Remai Modern Saskatoon

Remai Modern: A Contemporary Art Haven in Saskatoon

Saskatoon’s Remai Modern is an iconic contemporary art museum that has quickly become one of the most exciting cultural hubs in Canada. Opened in 2017, it showcases cutting-edge modern art and offers visitors a mix of global, national, and local artworks. My visit to Remai Modern felt like stepping into a world where art takes center stage, and I highly recommend it for anyone passionate about art, culture, or simply seeking a unique experience in Saskatoon.

History of Remai Modern

Remai Modern is a relatively new addition to Saskatoon’s cultural landscape. The museum was established with the vision of being a leading institution for contemporary art in North America. The building itself, designed by architect Bruce Kuwabara, is a modern masterpiece that sits gracefully on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. It boasts 11 gallery spaces, a learning center, and a theatre, with a particular focus on works by Indigenous artists and Pablo Picasso linocuts, gifted to the museum by the Remai family.

Best Time to Visit

You can visit the museum year-round, but timing your trip can enhance your experience:

  • Spring & Summer: Visiting during these seasons offers the opportunity to pair your museum trip with other nearby outdoor attractions. The Meewasin Valley Trail, located just outside, is perfect for a scenic stroll along the river before or after your visit.

  • Autumn & Winter: The museum is a fantastic indoor activity during the colder months, offering warmth and inspiration when the weather isn’t ideal for outdoor adventures.

  • Opening Hours: Remai Modern is open Tuesday to Sunday, typically from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Fridays. It’s always best to check their website for any changes or holiday closures.

How to Get There from Toronto

Traveling from Toronto to Saskatoon is quite straightforward. Here are a few travel options:

By Air

The fastest and most convenient option is to fly from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport (YXE). Direct flights take about 3.5 hours.

  • Estimated Airfare: $300 – $600 CAD round-trip, depending on the season.
  • From the Airport: You can either rent a car, take a taxi, or use ride-sharing services like Uber to reach the museum, which is about a 20-minute drive from the airport.
By Train (VIA Rail)

For those who love a scenic journey, VIA Rail offers a service to Saskatoon, but it’s a longer and less direct option. The train journey from Toronto takes around 2-3 days, with a transfer in Winnipeg.

  • Estimated Train Fare: $400 – $800 CAD one-way, depending on class and accommodation.
  • Local Transport: You’ll need to rent a car or take a taxi from the train station to reach the museum.
By Car

Driving from Toronto to Saskatoon takes about 27-30 hours without major stops. While it’s a long drive, you’ll pass through the beautiful landscapes of Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

  • Estimated Fuel Costs: $300 – $450 CAD round-trip, depending on gas prices and vehicle type.
Local Transportation

Once in Saskatoon, Remai Modern is easily accessible from most parts of the city. If you’re staying downtown, the museum is within walking distance. You can also take local buses or taxis. Public transit stops near the museum, but walking or using a ride-share service is often more convenient.

Nearby Attractions

One of the best parts about visiting Remai Modern is its proximity to other attractions in Saskatoon. Some of my personal favorites include:

  • Meewasin Valley Trail: This scenic walking and cycling trail follows the South Saskatchewan River and offers breathtaking views. It’s a great place to relax after a day at the museum.
  • Wanuskewin Heritage Park: A short 20-minute drive from Remai Modern, this park showcases Indigenous history and culture, perfect for a deeper cultural experience.
  • Broadway Avenue: Just a short walk or drive away, this vibrant district is home to boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it an ideal spot for post-museum dining or shopping.
Ticket Information
  • Admission to Remai Modern is donation-based, meaning there are no set ticket prices. Visitors can contribute any amount, and youth under 18 enjoy free entry. For those planning multiple visits, a membership provides year-round access and discounts on special events. Your donations help support the museum’s exhibitions and programs.
Tips for Visiting
  • Plan for 2-3 Hours: The museum is large, and with so many rotating exhibitions, you’ll want to give yourself enough time to explore.
  • Join a Guided Tour: If you want a deeper understanding of the exhibitions, joining a guided tour is highly recommended. The museum offers these tours regularly, and they’re led by knowledgeable staff.
  • Check the Calendar: Remai Modern hosts special events, talks, and workshops throughout the year. I always recommend checking their website before your visit to see if any events align with your interests.
  • Dress Comfortably: Since you’ll be walking through the galleries, it’s best to wear comfortable shoes.
  • Is food or drink allowed in the museum?

No, food and drink are not allowed inside the galleries. However, you can enjoy them in the common areas, such as the entrance atrium and spaces outside the galleries.

  • Are cell phones allowed in the museum?

Yes, cell phones are allowed at Remai Modern, but visitors are kindly asked to keep them on silent while inside the building.

Weather in Saskatoon

Saskatoon experiences a full range of seasons:

  • Winter (November – March): Temperatures often drop below -10°C, so if you’re visiting during this time, pack warm clothes. However, the museum is a great indoor activity to escape the cold.
  • Summer (June – August): Summers in Saskatoon are warm, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. This is an excellent time for both indoor and outdoor activities.
What I Loved About Remai Modern

What I truly appreciated about Remai Modern was its unique blend of contemporary art with a focus on local history and culture. The architecture alone is breathtaking, but it’s the depth and variety of the exhibitions that really make this museum special. I was especially captivated by the Picasso linocut collection, something you won’t easily find elsewhere. I also loved the peaceful atmosphere — it’s the perfect place to take a break from the city’s hustle and immerse yourself in art.

If you’re visiting Saskatoon, Remai Modern is an absolute must-see. Whether you’re a seasoned art lover or just curious to explore something new, this museum will leave you inspired and thinking long after you leave.
